It’s true. Simple ideas are more often than not, the ones that work best. Aaron Vankampen’s TikTok profile is gaining traction because of his curiosity towards people who own luxurious cars, sitting in front of their million-dollar mansions.

Since starting back in November 2020, Aaron’s TikTok account has risen to 1.2 million followers. This is a perfect example of how anyone can take advantage of new platforms like TikTok if ideas are different.

Aaron was actually a location scout, finding places for pre-production filmmaking and commercial photography.

Quenching Our Curiosity

Aaron has been scouting houses across Toronto and knocking on strangers doors to ask “what do you do for a living?”. This draws people to his profile because it’s answering our own curiosities. When we drive past million-dollar mansions, seeing a Porsche in the front driveway, we all want to know what that owner might do for a living.

When marketers try to build brands, we’re always looking for that competitive advantage through differentiation. Being able to position and market a brand differently can draw people’s attention and create a lasting impression of that brand in people’s mind.

A large part of marketing involves being different. What new ideas do we have to create content, package our products, stand out from the crowd and provide a value proposition better than our competitors? There is a lot of power in being different, and from Aaron Vankempan’s recent success, we can see that it doesn’t always have to be a big idea.

Simple ideas that fuel our inquisitive nature, work brilliantly.

As entrepreneurs, marketers and content creators we sometimes struggle to find great ideas. We go searching for inspiration on people’s social profiles, visit dozens of different websites, look at what competitors are doing in our local and foreign markets, and go to galleries or music gigs . . when we can!

The reality is that we sometimes forget to ask ourselves, what am I curious about? It sounds simple, but we get caught in the trap of looking outwards, consumed by the long tail of content being created. On YouTube alone, there are 500 hours of content uploaded every minute.

Next time you’re looking for a brilliant idea, ask yourself “what am I curious about?”.
